The mission of the Poetry/Poetics Hub (PPH) is to foster a dynamic environment for poetry—its creation, study, and presence—at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Its purpose is to generate a fresh interest in poetic language, to bring together university members and the community of Santa Barbara who share common interests in contemporary poetry. The Hub will also seek funding for events including lectures, readings, and interdisciplinary work related to poetry. The Hub is interested in the new, in the here and now of poetry. It means to encourage a close tight knit community of scholars and artists dedicated to poetry. As well, the Hub wishes to draw on graduate and faculty expertise to examine how poetry circulates in both pop and sub cultural communities and media forms including Facebook, Twitter, Ipad applications, small press publications, movie adaptations (most recently Howl and Sylvia), and so forth. The Hub will host a bi-weekly informal workshop (with rotating facilators), an end-of-the-quarter poetry reading featuring guest readers and select student readings, and a variety of poetry-related events, including films and lectures. The Hub is meant to facilitate the poetic interests of the intellectual community in Santa Barbara by offering a provocative program of events, discussion, and readings, to underline the important cultural work poetry accomplishes. The PPH is a student organization with several departmental affiliations.
